How to get thicker hair for men

In a society focused on outward appearances, the words “thinning hair” can strike fear into a man’s heart.

If you’re experiencing baldness and/or thinning hair, you’re not alone. More than 50% of all men will experience some form of hair loss.

The bald look can be sexy, but thinning hair and patchiness is not. This article focuses on how you can prevent thinning hair and what you can do once it starts.

Note: This article does not cover hair transplantation surgery, laser combs, or regrowth shampoos.

What causes hair thinning?

732x549_THUMBNAIL_Hair_Loss_Treatments_For_MenAndrogenetic alopecia or “male pattern baldness” (MPB) is responsible for up to 95% of hair loss in men. Roughly 50% of all men will experience MPB at some point during their lives.

In America, roughly 66% of men experience some form of hair loss by age 35 and 85% experience a significant amount of hair loss by age 50. The risk increases significantly if you are Caucasian.

Hormones like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) play a big role in male pattern baldness. Your body naturally starts to break down testosterone as you age. The byproduct of this process is DHT, which shrinks and damages hair follicles.

DHT is a type of androgen, which is a hormone that helps regulate hair growth. An increased level of androgens in the hair follicles can delay and prevent growth.

Genetics also plays a large role in male pattern baldness, but scientists haven’t been able to determine exactly how the trait is passed.

External factors may accelerate hair loss, but play a smaller role in causing it. These factors include:

  • Stress
  • Malnutrition
  • Poor hygiene

How to thicken hair naturally

6.Hairstyle-for-Men-with-Thin-Hair-minThere are several ways to get thicker hair, including better grooming habits, supplements, and thickening shampoos. Perhaps the only way to “instantly” thicken the hair is to adopt a styling technique that makes your hair appear thicker.

Avoid heavy products that can weigh your hair down. Instead, choose volumizing mousse or any type of spray that says “root lift.” You can also use a blow dryer to get instant volume (just make sure not to overdo it).

Speak with your hair stylist about getting a cut that will mask bald spots/thinning hair and use.

Ditch the comb. Use your fingers to style your hair for a more volumized look.

Stop smoking cigarettes. Smoking can constrict the tiny blood vessels in your scalp that provide nutrients your hair needs to grow.

Wear a hat in the sun. UV exposure causes your scalp to produce superoxide, which can cause shedding. It can also make your hair brittle, which means it is more likely to fall out or snap off.

Stress can cause hair loss, so stop stressing out about your hair loss! Minimize stress by allocating time for yourself, exercising frequently, and doing things you enjoy.

Shampoo frequently. Use your fingers to massage the scalp for 2-3 minutes each time you shower. This will energize the scalp and bring blood to your hair follicles. Hot water can dry out your hair and skin, so it’s best to use warm or cool water in the shower.

Greasy, dirty hair tends to be flat and limp. Avoid this look with regular washing. Even better, use a thickening shampoo (more on this below).

Did you know your hair is 3x weaker when it’s wet? Avoid combing or excessive rubbing with a towel when your hair is wet. Pat and squeeze with a towel to get rid of excess water and then let your hair dry naturally.

Switch to soy. Hair is made primarily of protein, and soy is rich in protein. Soy is also a great source of fiber, potassium, iron, folic acid, and B vitamins – all of which are essential for healthy hair.

Studies show that soy can even block the cancer-producing behavior of DHT. When the human body digests soy, we get a molecule called “equol.” Studies suggest that equol can inhibit DHT without affecting testosterone levels.

Propecia – a common hair loss prescription drug – works in much the same way.

Shampoo to get thicker hair

It’s much easier to thicken hair than to get new hair growth in bald areas. Sometimes, all you need is the right shampoo, a proper diet, and some styling tips.

Advantages of thickening shampoos:

  • Improves the health and appearance of your hair by cleaning and repairing DHT-damaged hair follicles
  • Gentle enough to be used as your primary shampoo
  • Likely includes other healthy ingredients
  • Expands hair width

imagesThickening shampoos work, but it’s important to keep in mind that the difference isn’t going to be dramatic. Your results will depend on your hair type and at what level of hair loss you might be experiencing.

People with higher hair density will have better effects than people with sparse hair density. Blondes are most likely to have high hair counts.

Note: Your thickening shampoo won’t prevent future hair loss on its own.

Note: If you have curly hair or very thick hair, you might want to try the thickening shampoo on your day off.

A final word

As with every other medical condition, early detection is key. Some studies suggest that you have already lost 50% of your hair by the time hair loss starts to become visibly noticeable.

That means that if you’re a man over the age of 25, you should start to follow preventative methods if you want to keep your locks.
