Cellulite can happen to anyone, even to people who are otherwise slim and fit. Cellulite is unattractive, and can make us self-conscious at the beach and in the bedroom. It can make us look and feel older than we are.
Here’s the ugly truth: Up to 90% of women will experience cellulite during their lives.
Keep reading to learn more about cellulite, what you can to do minimize and prevent it, and for cellulite machine reviews.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a condition marked by dimpled flesh. It typically occurs on the thighs and buttocks, but can occur in other areas too.
Due to body composition, cellulite is far more likely to occur in women than in men.
Other names for cellulite include: cottage-cheese skin, orange-peel skin, hail damage, and “the mattress phenomenon.”
How do you get it?
Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissues beneath your skin. Exactly what causes this to happen is unknown.
Genetics, age, and hormones all play a role in cellulite development. The following hormones are all part of the cellulite formation process:
- Thyroid hormones
One popular theory for the formation of cellulite is that as a female’s estrogen levels decrease with age, blood flow to the connective tissue beneath the skin decreases and contributes to the formation of cellulite.
Risk factors for cellulite include:
- A diet high in salt, fat, and carbs
- A diet low in fiber
- Smoking cigarettes
- Lack of exercise/sedentary lifestyle
- Wearing tight underwear/pants
- Being overweight
Can you get rid of it permanently?
There are loads of products and treatments available, but even the best cellulite treatment machines produce temporary results.
Skin fillers can help smooth the appearance of dimpled skin, but the procedure is expensive and the results are temporary. The following non-invasive procedures work, but again, results are temporary:
- Radio frequency (Thermage CL)
- Laser (VelaSmooth, TriActiv)
Liposuction has not been proven effective in improving the appearance of cellulite. Despite what you see in advertisements, there is no topical cream that has been shown to permanently reduce cellulite.
Below, we review three anti-cellulite machines for home use.

How can you prevent cellulite?
You can decrease your chances of developing cellulite by maintaining a diet low in fat, avoiding cigarettes, and staying hydrated. Regular exercise has also been shown to help prevent cellulite and reduce the appearance of existing cellulite.
Cigarettes are known to reduce blood vessel flow and disrupt the formation of collagen. This makes it easier for your connective tissues to becomes stretched or damaged, which means it is more likely the underlying fat will show through.
Other negative effects smoking has on the skin include:
- Dry skin
- Discolored skin
- Premature wrinkles
